Summary: My version of WHN after "The Countess." The Cartwrights' home is destroyed by fire. In the aftermath, Stacy is left badly injured and Joe missing.
To give credit where it's due, when I posted "The Guardian" on another site, a reader by the name of Susie DiCarlo said in her feedback that she felt that story ended too soon after Joe's rescue and expressed a desire to see more of the comfort in the wake of the hurt. Her words were the seed of inspiration that finally germinated into "Trial By Fire."
