Springtime

By J. T. Williams

When springtime comes Virginia City calls you,
There with luck you will find me stuck,
In the pleasures of life yes in all this muck,
Pa, Adam, and Hoss I love you,
However, it will have to wait for springtime.

When I left it was Christmas morn' in 1861,
And we were O so Happy that Christmas morn',
When I left I said, 'I'll be back in the springtime don't you worry,'
Yet I wasn't home by springtime no I wasn't.

When springtime comes Virginia City calls you,
There with luck you will find me stuck,
In the pleasures of life yes in all this muck,
Pa, Adam, and Hoss I love you,
However, it will have to wait for springtime.

I found myself in a battle not two months later,
They say I was the best shooter in the bunch,
I killed my fair share of men in that war,
But Pa don't you fret I didn't let it get to me,

When springtime comes Virginia City calls you,
There with luck you will find me stuck,
In the pleasures of life yes in all this muck,
Pa, Adam, and Hoss I love you,
However, it will have to wait for springtime.

In that war, I wore Dark blue,
Though I'm from Southern Blood,
I fought with a feeling that I didn't know I had,
As I fought for the North, my heart was with the South.

When springtime comes Virginia City calls you,
There with luck you will find me stuck,
In the pleasures of life yes in all this muck,
Pa, Adam, and Hoss I love you,
However, it will have to wait for springtime.

After the war I went to sea for a time,
I stopped in England I stopped in Africa,
And I stopped in China but I can say,
Nothing compares to Home in America.

When springtime comes Virginia City calls you,
There with luck you will find me stuck,
In the pleasures of life yes in all this muck,
Pa, Adam, and Hoss I love you,
However, it will have to wait for springtime.

Now two years have passed since my ship has landed,
And I've returned home to Virginia City at last,
Yet, my years of wandering have changed me in a way I don't like,
For my name is now feared in all of, the west and they call me Gunfighter.

When springtime comes Virginia City calls you,
There with luck you will find me stuck,
In the pleasures of life yes in all this muck,
Pa, Adam, and Hoss I love you,
However, it will have to wait for springtime.

No one recognizes me here for that I'm grateful,
I hear that Adam is sick now and I hope he is better soon,
For Christmas is coming and I'm sure, you don't want him sick then,
I've been gone for eight years now I'm not sure you'll know me.

When springtime comes Virginia City calls you,
There with luck you will find me stuck,
In the pleasures of life yes in all this muck,
Pa, Adam, and Hoss I love you,
However, it will have to wait for springtime.

I hope you like the presents I left under the tree for you,
I hear you are still wondering who put them under your tree,
Don't you worry Pa Springtime is coming fast,
It'll be here before you know it and then I can say.

Springtime is finally here and I'm riding home,
I'm now in the yard the door is opening I see Hoss' face smilin' at me,
Adam comes out the door slowly and grins,
Then there you are your mouth open in surprise and then you are saying,
Welcome home, son we missed you, now I know springtime has finally arrived.
