Adam had Meag just where he liked; off her feet and in his arms. He carried her over the threshold of their newly built home. Finished and furnished after several months of bad weather and delays, the house was now a home; everything they could ask for.

Ben and Catherine took nine month old granddaughter Lizzie for a few days. This way, Meag and Adam could have some time to unpack, settle in and gratefully have a few days to their selves. Now that Lizzie was clearly thriving at 9 months and no longer as frail as her premature birth dictated Adam and Meag needed this time together.

“It is beautiful Adam; you can put me down now.” Meag said as his kisses trailed down her throat. “Umm what did you say, take you to the master suite?”
Your brothers are still here you know.” Meag said kissing his chin.
With a deep sigh, Adam put her on her feet. “I will hurry them to finish.” Adam said winking at her then with a playful pat on her backside he walked outside to the last of the wagon load of boxes and supplies.
Meag blushed as she turned away. He could make her blush in a snow storm, the insufferable man. She smiled and started to unpack a few boxes in the kitchen.
Thankfully Hop Sing sent over enough food to last them for their hiatus of a few days before Lin Se moved in permanently. With Meag’s new book project and her inability to cook an edible meal, Adam happily hired Lin Se.
Lin Se went with Meag and Catherine to the new house last week. The small Chinese girl was astonished at the large room that would be hers. Meag had encouraged her to make the room her own, with colorful fabrics and furniture. The women made a trip to town to pick out materials and ordered a set of furniture to her liking. Lin Se never heard of such a thing. Hop Sing had a long talk with her and convinced her that all would be well and to enjoy her employment and acceptance into this family.

Adam joined his brothers outside. “Adam, this house sure is big enough. How many little Cartwrights are you planning?” Joe said.
“Meag wants a big family. Two of the rooms will be offices, mine and one for Meag. There is a library on the bottom floor.”

“That crate, pointing to a overlarge crate on the back of the buckboard, “must be all these dang books, they are heavy Adam.” Joe said complaining already.

“Maybe you could break out the sandwiches now big brother.” Hoss said after taking in two big crates and coming back for more unloading. His stomach has been growling like a wild bear in a trap.
“I want to get some more work out of you two first before I send you on your way.”
“I can’t work if I faint dead away. I know Hop Sing sent some grub over. Where is it?” Hoss said now irritated.

“Better feed the bear Adam or he will whine all day.” Joe said taking a small box inside.
“Is that all you can carry. I want this done ...today...soon.” Adam said getting just as irritable.
Hoss and Joe exchanged glances. “Yep, as a matter of fact, I am getting hungry too. What’s for lunch?” Joe said putting down his small box.
“It’s ten in the morning; can’t you two make it to noon?”
“Nope.” They both said in unison.
Adam rolled his eyes. “Alright, take those crates in and I will have Meag fix the sandwiches.”

Catherine did not know what Ben was doing with Lizzie by the corrals, but the child was giggling and laughing to high heaven. She walked outside to join them. “As I suspected, my granddaughter is a horse nut.” Ben said holding Lizzie on his hip as she touched the horses with a tentative hand then drew it away giggling again.
“Chip off the old Cartwright block alright.” Catherine said chuckling at the baby’s fit of giggles.
Ben watched Lizzie yawn. “Seems like its nap time, maybe for me too. Care to join me madam?”
“What has gotten into you lately, Benjamin Cartwright?” Catherine whispered in his ear.
“Why are you whispering wife, seems the only person around is my Lizzie and she is not talking, yet that is.”
“I don’t know why, just that you have been lets say, very exuberant lately, even more than usual.”
“Are you complaining? It didn’t sound like a complaint this morning.” Ben said with a familiar twinkle in his eye.

“Heavens no, I feel like we are on our honeymoon again. Are you ready for that nap?” Catherine said winking at him.

With the last of the crates unloaded and furniture set up, Joe and Hoss left for town. Ben gave them a list to fill before they left for Adam’s, and told them to take their time coming home. Joe was only too glad not to have any more chores today. Hoss had other ideas what to do with his free time in town besides getting supplies. The Harvest dance was this weekend and he wanted to invite Frieda Berg. Problem was, he never spoke to her before, only nodded at her once or twice. To Hoss, that was dang near an introduction. Having his big mouth brother Joe with him would put a damper on things. If only he could not get rid of his little brother in a way he would not be suspicious as to the why of it.

Betty June Svenson hurried her cousin Frieda Berg along the boardwalk to the dress shop. “Mama said it was perfectly fine for us to shop for new dresses.”
“I can make a dress in one night, no need for store bought fancy goods.” Frieda said. She was visiting for many months with her Aunt and Uncle Svenson. Her father died recently in Minnesota, her mother sent her on so she could tie up some loose ends and sell the business. Their family owned a dairy. She hated leaving. knowing that it would be the last time she would see her friends for many years to come. Aunt Kate spoiled Betty June with many nice clothes and things. Frieda was not used to buying a dress when she could make one perfectly well. Besides being as tall as she was, she doubted any boys would be looking at her at the Harvest dance.

“I have a green dress that will suit me well for the dance. Let’s just find you one Betty June.” Frieda said insistently.
“No, we will both have new pretty dresses and be the bells of the Harvest dance.” Betty June insisted.
“I don’t know.” Frieda said unsure of even going to this Harvest dance.

Joe watched his older brother with frustration. He insisted Joe hang around until the order at Anderson’s was made for the supplies then shooed him off like an unwanted coyote in a hen house. “You be back here in about an hour.” Hoss said pointing a finger at the 15 year old.
“What are you so touched about? I hope you aren’t gonna gamble, Pa said no to your gambling lately.”
Just you be right back here little brother. If I hafta find ya, well you’ll be one sorry Cartwright.”
Joe left, he would spy on Hoss just to make sure he wasn’t up to something..

Seeing Betty June and her cousin Frieda coming out of the dress shop, Hoss knew this was his big chance. No pest of a little brother around, he walked up to the pair.
“Howdy Betty June,” then nodding to her cousin, Hoss took off his hat. Betty June flashed a smile; she was hoping to introduce Frieda around. Now Hoss would be a nice match for her over tall cousin, since he was 6'4" and she was 5'11".
“Hoss Cartwright, I would like you to meet Frieda Berg, my cousin from Minnesota.”
“Nice to meet you Miss Frieda, hope you like it here.”
“Yes, I -I like it here fine Mr. Cartwright.” Frieda said flustered.

Hoss was immediately enchanted with her Swedish accent. “My mother was Swedish.” He said dumbly. For once he felt comfortable talking to a girl. She had hair the color of yellow wheat fields and eyes blue as the skies. She smiled and he was lost.
Betty June interrupted his thoughts.
“Oh Hoss, you should taste Frieda’s cooking. She is an excellent baker. She is bringing cookies to the Harvest dance. Are you going Hoss?” Betty June said.
“Yes” he said now bright red all the way to his toes. “Miss Frieda, I would be right proud if you would come to the dance with me.
Frieda gave him a smile. “I would like that Hoss, but I must ask my Uncle if that would be permissible.”

“I should of thought of that Miss Frieda. I will come by tomorrow night, and ask him, if that is alright with you.”
Betty June and Frieda glanced at each other. “Oh ya, that would be alright Hoss.”

Joe could not believe his eyes; Hoss talking with not one girl but two. Almost makes a fella want to spit. He found Seth behind the livery stable with his pockets empty from playing dice.
“Joe you got any money?”
“No, Hoss only gave me enough for a bag of candy, I already ate that.”
“Big doin’s this weekend, Saturday the Harvest Dance and Sunday the Picnic at the Creek, the whole town is going to be there.” Seth said.
“You gonna do some dancing Seth?” Joe teased shaking his butt.

Seth reached out and slugged him in the arm. “Hell no, but they always got a whole table of food at those things.”
The two left the livery toward main street when Joe stopped Seth with a jerk on his shirt. “Look over there, my poor brother. He is already making a fool out of himself and it ain’t even springtime, who is that tall gal?”
“Cousin to Betty June; she is staying with her family for awhile. Yeah, Hoss looks like he ‘got it bad.’
“Moon-eyed, look at him, happy as a flea in a dog-house. It’s disgusting.” Joe said shaking his head.
)))
Adam chuckled watching Meag sleeping on the sofa, bare naked with that sweet grin he put there just a half hour ago. Every time they unpacked a room they ‘celebrated’ by making love in each finished room. He would wake her again and remind her they still haven’t finished the kitchen. His thoughts wandered to the kitchen table and what they could do. He felt insatiable.
Waking her with a long kiss, her eyes slowly opened.
Catching his devilish grin, she cupped both sides of his face.
“Adam, we will never finish at this rate.” Meag said sleepily. It was only 2 in the afternoon they only managed the front room and oh yes, his office. Now, that is one desk that will never be sold. He was behind her then, oh it was delicious how he slowly divested her of her skirt and then blouse taking his sweet time driving her mad with need. Hands replaced with lips then tongue up and down her back sliding the fire of his touch until she was panting, shaking with the want of him. His hands took her wrists asking her to hold onto the desk as he entered her, driving her over the edge not once but twice.

Patting her backside, he handed her clothes she left on the floor. “I would leave the drawers right there. Seems to be a waste of effort to me.” Adam said with a self smug.
“I am going to get the kitchen done Adam Cartwright. Do you might want to start on the other office or Lizzie’s room?”
“This is a ‘joint’ effort my dove. Our house is being christened in a most loving way, wouldn’t you agree?”
“I don’t think we can survive unpacking our bedroom. I really don’t have the strength.”
“That room we will save until tonight. I have a special bottle of wine while we work.”
His slow smile undid her every single time.
“I wonder how our Lizzie is doing.”
“Sweetheart, she will be fine. She is being properly spoiled and coddled by her grandpa.”
“Adam, could you carry that box into the kitchen for me?” Meag said walking away, was that an extra swish in her walk. He hoped so.
))))

Catherine had Lizzie undressed and ready for her bath. The little girl was not a big fan of getting her hair washed. “Now Lizzie, you stop that fussing. You can play splash, splash when I am done.”
Ben walked in getting more coffee from the kitchen. “Joe used to be the same way. I used to hold him like this, Ben demonstrated an under the arm hold, then pour the water gently over those curls. They managed to get the deed done then set her back in the round tub with a few toys. Splashing and giggling, Lizzie was enjoying herself.

“She sure has improved in her sitting up and rolling over. I almost lost her over the bed this morning, she is getting strong Ben.” Catherine said.
The premature entry to the world did slow her down until recently. “She will be walking before we know it. Then look out, if she has any of Adam in her she will be as curious as a cat. He used to send me on some merry chases looking for him. In those days on the trail, that could of meant his very life. I am afraid in more than one instance his curiosity earned him some trouble with his Pa.”
“Well, what goes around comes around. I think this little one will give Meag and Adam a good run for their money.” Catherine said.
True to form, Lizzie then decided to splash them both. Water dripping from his hair and face, Ben gave the baby a look that sent her into another fit of baby laughter.

By the time Hop Sing had dinner on the table, Lizzie was already deep in her mash potatoes.
“Unlike her papa, this one likes mashed potatoes. In fact she likes to wear them.” Ben said trying to keep from laughing.
“How was town, Hoss?” Catherine asked trying to keep potatoes from flying across the table.
“The Harvest dance poster is in the Anderson Mercantile. Ladies are asked to contribute some baked goods.”
He didn’t want to bring up the fact he actually asked a girl to the dance, not with Little Joe around.
“Well I have been working on a pie recipe just for this occasion. I am sure between Hop Sing and I, we can contribute some fine dishes.”
“Hoss has been working on a little somethin’ sweet himself.” Joe said with a mischievous look on his face.
Hoss turned red then gave Joe a scowl that promised more than pain if he continued. Joe smiled and concentrated on his dinner.
Ben and Catherine exchanged glances. “Joseph, I want to see you on those fences tomorrow, and leave your brother alone.”
“Yes sir. I was hoping to maybe go fishing with Seth, after chores of course.” Joe said stuffing his face.
“Of course, check with me After you finish with the fences. I may have some other chores in mind for you since you have left the barn tack room half undone last week.”
Hoss took Lizzie from Catherine so she could eat the rest of her dinner. “When are Adam and Meag coming to take Lizzie back home?”
“In a few days, I am sure they are busy with their house and are enjoying having a few nights without this little curly headed rooster to wake them in the middle of the night. I am sure they are missing her very much, but they could use some time alone.” Ben said making a face at the baby who smiled wide in response.
Hop Sing and Lin Se took the baby so everyone could enjoy their pie. “Little Tiger need another bath.” He said.
“Thank you Hop Sing. I will rock her to sleep in a little while, she likes it when I read to her.” Catherine said.
“Just like her parents, she likes books.” Ben said squeezing Catherine’s hand.
)))

Laughing uncontrollably, Meag had her back against the front door that she just locked. Adam went outside to check on their late night picnic by the spring, now he was locked out, without his clothes on.
“Madam I am quite naked, let me in.”
“As the little piggie said to the wolf, ‘not by the hair on my chinny chin chin”. She said laughing harder.
“When I do come in, you will be one sorry little piggy madam, sorry indeed.”
“I like to keep you on your toes, your naked toes especially.” Meag said through the door.
“Honey please, it is a little chilly out here.”
“Parlay sir, you promise not to be angry when I open the door.”
“Agreed Brat, now open the door.”
Meag opened the door only to be swooped up in his arms and carried outside to the picnic blanket. He made swift work of any doubt who was in charge. Kissing her deeply, she moaned into his mouth. They made love under the stars then soaked their sore limbs from all the bed play in their hot springs. It was glorious. A few hours of a repeat performance or two, they headed inside to sleep. As they reached the door, it would not open. Meag did not have time to unlock the device as Adam gave her none. With a glance at each other, the two fell into another fit of chuckles, they were exhausted, cold and quite naked.
))))
Catherine had taken care to double diaper, burp and read to Lizzie until she fell deeply asleep. Ben was already in bed waiting for her. He had been giving her amorous hints through the day; tonight he would make love to her. If it had to be on Lizzie’s schedule then so be it.
“I take it she is sleeping heavily.” Ben said removing the covers.
“Yes, it took two books, but she is asleep.” Catherine said removing her night wrap.
“Come here sweet.” Ben said taking her hand in his pulling her toward him.
Before she could put her head on the pillow, he had her in an embrace, his warmth enveloping her like a blanket. She moved her hands over his back pulling him closer. His little wife was not timid, she was bold and inventive. He loved her fierce zest for life itself, especially in their bed.
Catherine had not thought it possible but the moment he had released his passion and pulled her close to sleep, she knew with all her being, that tonight they had conceived a child of their own. With a grin she slept content and snug in her husband’s arms. Yes, there was no doubt to Catherine, a new life began tonight.
)))
Coming into the house from the barn, Joe went to wash in the kitchen basin. His father was just getting his second cup of coffee.
“Meag and Adam are here Pa.” Joe said wiping his hands.
“So early, I guess they missed the baby terribly. She will be glad to see her mommy and daddy.

Meag practically jumped from the buggy heading for the front door of the Ponderosa. “Darling, let me stop first, I know you missed her but...Adam was talking to himself. He missed the baby just as much, but the last few days were wonderful.
Catherine had the baby in her arms. Turning toward the opening door Lizzie’s eyes lit up hearing her mother’s voice. “Lizzie sweetheart, ohh how I missed you!”

The baby reached for her with both arms. “Seems she missed you both. We loved having her here.” Catherine said handing Meag her baby girl. Adam cooed and kissed the baby making baby noises that did not seem conforming to the tall serious cowboy.

Hop Sing made a nice and breakfast for everyone. Lizzie sat on her daddy’s lap, not willing to go to anyone but her own parents for now. Ben even tried to coax her, but Lizzie gave a frown that made everyone laugh.
“She won’t let us out of her sight for sometime to come.” Adam said kissing the top of her dark curls.
“She was trying to crawl earlier Meag. I can’t believe how well she is doing.” Catherine said.
“Well, soon she will be running around in the house getting into everything; I can’t wait.” Meag said.
“She says that now. Wait until she tips the ink well, tears up her manuscripts or writes on the walls, I can’t wait to see how mommy reacts to that.” Adam teased.
“Mommy will be just fine; it’s her over bearing daddy that might tear his hair out.” Meag chided.
The thought of Lizzie growing only made Adam and Meag feel more blessed. They did not know for months if the tiny babe would survive at all. Now she seems healthy and happy thanks to Hop Sing and Doc Martin.

“Little Tiger eat well, she like Hop Sing’s pancakes.” Hop Sing said with a smile.
“How did your unpacking and arranging come along?” Ben asked making a silly face at Lizzie.
Meag took a quick glance at her husband who had a mischievous look on his face. Meag blushed quickly then cleared her throat.
“Fine Pa, still some work to do, but nothing that can’t wait. I was anxious to get Lizzie home. Her room is finished. Adam had added a few wooden cutouts of horses with wings on the walls. My husband has many talents.” Meag said then blushed again.

“Well this young lady is a horse nut, if you didn’t know that already. I hope you are ready for that Adam.”
“Horse nut hey? Well that is understandable; she seems to like any animal.” Adam added.
Catherine brought up the Harvest Dance. It would be the following weekend, she hoped they would be coming with the family.
“The Harvest dance on the 15th, are you two coming?”
“Yes, although I don’t think Meag should bring her baking goods.” Adam said receiving an elbow from his not so amused wife.
“Hop Sing and I will do that, please come here early, we can all leave together.” Catherine said.

They stayed another hour or so. When it was getting late, Adam gathered his family to head home.
Lin Se was leaving the Ponderosa to live with Adam and his family. She was a god send as far as Meag was concerned. The young Chinese woman was skilled in the kitchen and was very good with Lizzie. Meag and Lin Se got along very well and become fast friends.
Saying their farewells, it felt strange to leave the Ponderosa to go home. Adam thought.
)))

The following week was busy with the moving of the herd to the lower pastures. Adam helped with that since part of that herd was his own. Hoss seemed distracted these past few days. It worried Adam, was he feeling strange about him and Meag moving out? He didn’t like to see Hoss hurt or unhappy.
“What is eating you big little brother?” Adam asked riding up alongside of him.
“Isn’t anything; I was just thinking about things.”
“You want to talk, I need a break. Let’s go sit in the shade; Lin Se packed some good tasting cookies in my pack.” Adam said.
“She sure is a good cook, almost as good as Hop Sing.” Hoss said moving toward the shade of a big tree near the running stream.
“Why are you so distracted?”
“I asked Frieda Berg to the dance. She said yes.”
“Don’t think I know a Frieda Berg, she new in town?” Adam pried, she must be new.
“Yep, staying with the Svenson’s, she is Betty June’s cousin from Minnesota. She is nice, real nice.”
“It will be fine, what are you worried about?” Adam knew there had to be more to it.
“Would if she and I dance and I step on her toes or something, would if I spill a drink on her or scare her off with my stupid mouth. I like her, hell fire would if ..”.
“Hoss, you got it bad don’t you buddy?” Adam said with a warm smile.
“Dang it Adam, don’t you go telling Joe or anybody.”
“I don’t think you have anything to worry about, she said yes didn’t she. She wants to go with you, it will be fine. You are a Cartwright, and we Cartwrights have more charm when it comes to the fairer sex ...he chuckled as Hoss turned crimson.
“Relax, it will be fine. You are a good dancer, I seen you with that little Amy Wittle, now you handled that just fine.”
They sat in silence for a while. Hoss, finishing his cookies got up brushing off the crumbs. “Come on let’s get this done.”
“Sure, let’s get this done. By the way Hoss, is this Frieda a blonde?”
“Has hair like spun gold, why?”
“Oh nothing, but it would be nice to have blonde nephew and nieces in the family. With that, he rode off with Hoss chasing after him.
)))
That Saturday afternoon, Catherine had her baking done in good time. Hop Sing did all his the night before. Hoss had taken an extra amount of time getting his bath done. He was upstairs in his room trying on his third shirt.
Joe walked by Hoss’ room only to find him with yet another shirt, he walked in without knocking taking a long dramatic sniff at his bigger brother.
“You can attract flies smelling like sweet, ya know.” Joe teased.
“You can attract worms once I pound you into the ground little brother.” Hoss said irritated.
“How many shirts do you have anyways?”
“Don’t you got anybody else to pester?”
“Nope.” Joe said sitting on Hoss’ bed.
“You best get yourself clean, Pa will have a fit if you ain’t ready to leave. I will be glad to tell him you were too busy pestering me.”
“I am ready, it’s just the Harvest dance.”
The booming voice of their Pa gave summons to his youngest. “JOSEPH!”

“Be right back Hoss.” Joe said.
Joe shook his head, he would never act like that because of some dumb dance. His father was standing at the bottom of the stairs. “Why are you not getting ready son?”
“I am ready Pa.”
“You will march up those stairs and put on that new shirt Catherine bought you and that string tie. No son of mine is going to look like a cowhand tonight. Now get.”
“Yes sir.” Joe said dejectedly heading upstairs.

Adam walked in carrying a box of baking goods Lin Se had made, Lin Se had a satchel of Lizzie’s toys, bottles and diapers. Meag holding Lizzie on her hip walked in behind them.
Lin Se put a blanket down with a few toys, reached for the baby who went to her easily.
“Hello Pa, Meag said kissing Ben on the cheek. Umm what smells so good?”
“Catherine’s pies and Hop Sings applesauce cookies.”
“Lin Se made a wonderful cake and pie too. Where is Catherine?”
“She is finishing getting dressed upstairs. Maybe you could hurry her along sweetheart.” Ben said. Meag started to go upstairs meeting Hoss on his way down.
“You look really handsome tonight Hoss. A little bird told me you have a date for the dance, is that true?”
“Little bird with a granite head and stubborn streak?”
“That’s the one. Well, is it true?”
“I asked a gal, I am going to pick her up now. See you later and keep my brothers from pestering me.”
“I will do my best Hoss. Have a good time tonight and by the way, you smell wonderful.” Meag said climbing to the top of the stairs. Little Joe popped out of his room. “Meag, is Lizzie downstairs?”
“Yes she is playing with her grandpa and daddy, Angel. I like your shirt is that new?”
“Yeah I guess so, so much fuss over a dance. I ain’t gonna dance, just eat the goods.”
“Soon we will have to start sending warning posters about you Angel, you are handsome, the girls will go crazy over you.”
“Ain’t interested, Seth and I are going to bachelors, never get married.” Joe said firmly.
Meag just smiled and shook her head. Knocking on Catherine’s door, Meag entered.

“Oh what a pretty dress” Catherine said looking at Meag.
“Adam brought this from San Francisco on his last trip. He has better taste than I do, insufferable man. I love your dress Catherine. Will Ben let you out of this house with that low cleavage, at least he will think it is too low.”
“He has not seen this dress yet, my Ben will be fine with it. He likes my..I mean, he isn’t as bullheaded as Adam is about such things.”
“Wanna wager on that?” Meag said with a raised brow.
“You have a bet. What are we betting?” Catherine said.
“If Ben says nothing, I owe you a new hat. If he says you are showing too much cleavage or along those lines, you owe me a new hat.” Meag said with a chuckle.
The ladies were the last ones ready, Ben and Adam both stared as their women descended the stairs. “We are two lucky men Adam.”
“Yes sir, I agree with that.”
Catherine stood next to Ben his eyes went immediately to her breasts. “New dress my love?”

“Yes, do you like it Ben?”
“Most of it, when you find the top piece I will like that too.” Ben said into her ear.
Catherine blushed. “This is it, love. I guess I will have your full attention tonight.”
“I won’t leave your side, count on it.”
Meag walked over to her casually. “Mrs. Pinrod has a nice blue one in the window I like.”
Catherine nodded. “You got it.”

Lin Se took Lizzie upstairs after everyone left for the dance. When she came back downstairs, Hop Sing handed her a small glass of his homemade plum wine. “A toast, to Little Tiger.”
Lin Se agreed, Lizzie Cartwright was a Little Tiger, such a will to live that baby. She appreciated all the Hop Sing taught her about medicines and herbs. She had a deep respect for Hop Sing, for many reasons.
“To Little Tiger.” Lin Se said with a very pretty smile, so thought Hop Sing.
)))
The Community Hall was alive with music, food and people. Joe soon found his friends, Seth and Mitch. Their plates were already being loaded. “Hey your brother Hoss is over there with that tall blonde girl, you know Betty June’s cousin. He is all gussied up.” Mitch said.
“Yeah, what a dang shame is stuck with some girl all night.” Joe said.
“Don’t look now Joe, but Hoss is going to the dance floor, yep he is a goner.”

“We got to do something.”

“My older brother did the same thing last spring. He met Mary Jenkins, remember her? Seth said.
Joe and Mitch groaned, Mary Jenkins was a spoiled rich snob.

“Well, she ended up breaking up with Josh. She was awful to him, I think she even made him cry. He was mad all the time, blame hard to live with. Even took a swing at me when I teased him, Pa had to finally step in and straighten him out. Joe if I were you, I would make sure Hoss ain’t made a fool of.” Mitch Devlin said.

“Sure would hate to see Hoss do that. When he is upset or hard to live with, Pa don’t put up with it at all. He is 17 now but that won’t help him when Pa is fed up. Look at her being all sweet and nice, must be a real she-devil to pull the wool over my brother’s eyes.” Joe said shaking his head.

Mrs. Browne was putting out the platter of sandwiches she prepared, Joe and Seth offered to help. “Oh that would be wonderful Joseph, I have more goodies in my buggy. Thank you boys.”
“Our pleasure ma’am,” Joe said sweetly as he could. The ladies liked him, he knew it.
“If that girl had to go home, Hoss would not be stuck with her tonight. He will thank us later.” Joe said thinking.

“She likes him a lot I don’t think she will go home without some help from us.” Seth said.
“Don’t hurt her, Hoss will not like that.” Joe said worried.

“Naw we will only tell her about Hoss’ fiancé we will call, Rosalie. She will leave in a huff that Hoss did not tell her about it and she will be gone and Hoss will be free.” Mitch said.

Getting Frieda away from Hoss was no easy feat. They had to give John Jones a whole dime to get him to ask Frieda for a dance. Reluctantly she agreed. Joe got Hoss alone. “Hey Hoss you sure you want to spend so much time with that girl?”

“I don’t think that is any of your bees wax. Besides little brother, I like her; she seems to like me. Now scat so you don’t jinx me tonight. Go pester Adam or Meag.” Hoss said looking out for Frieda who was being told something unpleasant, she was visibly upset. Hoss walked up to her. “Something wrong here, why are you so upset Frieda?”
John Jones wandered off, out of Hoss’ reach.
“I understand you have been spending a lot of time with Rosalie, you should have told me about her. In fact it sounds like you should marry her since you can’t keep your hands off her ‘bosoms’. Frieda ran out the door.

Hoss was in shock. Why would she be upset if he spent time with Rosalie, she was a good milk cow, how would you get milk if you didn’t...squeeze....he turned to his little brother who was cupping a hand over his mouth to keep from a bust-a-gut laugh.
.
He went right to Joe took him by the arm and out the door they went. Joe’s feet didn’t hit the wooden planks, not once.
“What did you and your friends say to Frieda?”Hoss said pointing a long finger at him.
“She asked if you had a favorite girl, we just told her Rosilee, she is your favorite isn’t she Hoss?” Joe said trying to feign as much innocence as he could, which wasn’t much.
Well what about the other part, about the ...the ...bosoms...don’t lie to me Joe!”
“That wasn’t me, that was Seth, he paid John to say that, he said you had your hands on her bosoms every day.”
“I don’t suppose you mentioned that Rosalie is a milk cow?”
It was the first time Hoss ever considered taking a strap to his little brother. “You will apologize to Frieda AND tell her the truth of who, I mean what Rosalie is. Is that clear little brother? If you don’t I am going to Pa, tonight, so help me.”

“But Hoss you are saved from that female, she was only trying to trap you. You should be thanking me.” Joe said pouting.
“DO IT and I mean NOW!” Hoss said one inch from Joe’s face.

Joe found Frieda fuming out by the horses. She would not tell her cousin what was wrong only that she wanted to be by herself. Joe walked up to her quietly. “Hi, my name is Joe Cartwright.
Frieda stiffened, she did not want to encounter another Cartwright for the rest of her life.
“Look, it was a joke. About that story about my brother Hoss and Rosalie.” Joe started to say.
“OH I suppose he told you to tell me that.”
“He told me to tell you the truth, I didn’t want you hurting my brother’s feelings, he ain’t used to women.”
“And you are I suppose.”Frieda said hotly.
“Women like me.” Joe said with ease.

“Well, he should not be putting his hands on a woman’s bosoms so your friend said, if they are not...well..married.”
“He can’t marry Rosalie.” Joe insisted.
“Oh, then he is a cad of the lowest sort.” Frieda said disgusted.
“Ok I will tell him you want him to marry Rosalie, but Pa sure gonna be disappointed. It would be the first Cartwright son married to a milk cow.”
“A WHAT!!!” Frieda said turning crimson with realization ...”Oh you are a scamp, you and your friends. So help me ...excuse me I have to find Hoss.”

“You’re not going to hurt him are you, his feelings I mean.” Joe said touching his arm.
“Not for the world. Nor would I let anyone else.” Frieda said as she went to find Hoss.

Hoss was outside hoping this awful night would end. “Hoss, can I talk to you?”Frieda said.
“Sure ya want to talk to me Frieda?”
“Your little brother told me of the prank they pulled. I have little brothers too. They can be such a pain can’t they.”
“You forgive him easily. I am thinking of letting Pa handle it.”
“I know we just met Hoss, I think you can figure something out about getting back at your little brother besides getting him in trouble with your father. You are easy to talk to, can we see each other again?” Frieda said lowly.
Hoss shyly took her hand. The music playing inside the hall was sweet and slow. They danced outside under the stars. He held her as they swayed to and fro. “This is nice, real nice.” Hoss said.

Getting home that night, Joe and Hoss went right up to bed. Hoss was smiling from ear to ear. Meag and Adam talked briefly with Hop Sing then bounded upstairs to Elizabeth. Their little one was sleeping soundly in her crib, sucking her thumb. “See Meag, she did fine, just fine.” Adam said.
“Do you think she will stay asleep while I ravish her father?” Meag said pulling on his shirt.
“Only if you can keep from waking the house and your baby daughter with your noises you are about to make.”
“Arrogant, insufferable man.” Meag groaned as he pulled her close cupping her bottom against him. .
“You would not have me any other way my lady.” Adam said pushing her back onto the bed.
Any loud moans or cries Adam smothered with his mouth, if his mouth was in the right vicinity.
)))

Hoss was ready to dunk his little brother in the well and leave him there. Little Joe never missed an opportunity to ride him about Frieda, knowing Hoss was truly smitten with the gal. Hoss had something he could do about the teasing and that was let his father know just what his baby son did to play a prank on Frieda, but even as exasperating Joe was, he didn’t want to see his brother taken to the barn over it.

That morning at breakfast Hoss was quiet, lost in thought. Joe smirked as Hoss got a dreamy look on his face. “Hoss, did you hear me son?” Ben said raising a speculative eyebrow.
“Sorry Pa, guess I was thinking about something. What was it you said?”

Slowly and with a calculated stern voice Ben began again. “I said, you will be going to town with Meag and Catherine after breakfast. I don’t want the ladies to be alone on those roads. They are going to their Society meeting. In the mean time you will get the mail and please see if the new harness have arrived.”
“Yes sir.” Hoss said secretly elated he has an opportunity to go to town and maybe catch a glimpse of Frieda.
“Can’t I go Pa?” Joe whined.
“No son, I have a very special project for you while the ladies are gone. You will help with Lizzie, after you finish that report you think I do not know about.”
“Yes sir, I will get right on it. I still have two days.”
“Knowing Mr. Taylor, he gave you that assignment weeks ago; three weeks ago as a matter of fact. I had a conversation with another parent at the dance last night young man, I want to see some real progress by today’s end or your ‘end’ will be mighty uncomfortable. Do I make myself clear?”
“Yes sir.” Joe said pinked with embarrassment.

Meag brought Lizzie downstairs after her feeding and bath. The baby’s face lit up when she saw everyone at the table.

Ben reached for his granddaughter. “Meag, hand me my granddaughter, you sit and have your breakfast.”
“Thank you Pa, I am starving.” Meag said setting Lizzie on his lap then reaching for the eggs and biscuits.
“You men think you can handle Lizzie until we get home?” Catherine asked with a grin.
“Today is Hop Sing’s laundry day, he can’t be running between that and Lizzie when she cries.” Meag added.
“Ladies I have raised three sons, I think I can handle this little lady until you two walk back into that door. Go to town and have yourself a lunch at the hotel after your meeting. We will be fine.” Ben said confidently while Lizzie reached for his hair.

Adam was not so confident, Lizzie did not take to anything but her mother’s milk. A substitution may put ‘Grandpa’ to the test today. “Hop Sing has concocted a mixture for her lunch today Pa.”
“Oh experimenting on my watch are you?” Ben said.
“Have faith oh wise one.” Meag teased.
The ladies left the men in charge. Lizzie started wailing as if on cue when her mama stepped out the door.

“Hey hey now, mommy will return, let’s take a walk around the yard.” Ben grabbed her ‘blankie’ she favors and took his little granddaughter outside. As soon as the sunshine hit her face she stopped her wailing.. Walking her toward the corral, Lizzie’s eyes widened when they came upon a horse sticking his nose over the railing. “Only 7 months old and you are already a horse nut. Well, that will make your papa happy.” Ben cooed at her.

Ben guided her tiny hand over the mane, she actually wrapped her tiny fingers around the animal’s hair for a moment. When the horse moved closer then neighed at her, her eyes got even wider and she was still for a moment then laughed, when another horse answered the neighing, she laughed again. It wasn’t too long that Ben was laughing too.

Virginia City

Hoss congratulated himself as he managed to actually keep an eye out for Frieda and maintain conversation with Catherine and Meag as they entered the city. Meag and Catherine rolled their eyes at Hoss; he wasn’t fooling anyone.
“Hoss, we will meet your for lunch at the hotel dear, and if you would like to bring a ‘friend’ to join us...” Catherine said with a wink.
“Yes’um.” Hoss said flushing a bit.

What Meag and Catherine walked did not resemble a “Ladies of Virginia City Society” type meeting, it was a heated, very loud yelling match between Mrs. Browne and Gertrude McEnroy.
“If we turned and left now we can get some shopping in..” Catherine said in Meag’s ear.
“Cowardice from a Cartwright, now. now Cat.” Meag said with a chuckle.
“Ladies, please what is this about?” Meag said interrupting.

“What this is about is that all the funds we raised this year for the orphanage building is gone, all gone and so is our treasurer. Margaret McEnroy and her husband Trent had taken the money and are now gone!”
Gertrude, Margaret’s sister, flushed a deep crimson and walked toward Mrs. Browne looking as if to strike her.
Catherine quickly moved between the two ladies. “Please everyone, take your seats. We will find out what is the problem. Gertrude’s sister Margaret is a very fine person, I am sure this is all a misunderstanding. In the meantime, let’s get on with business.”
“I move we ask Roy Coffee to investigate this, NOW!” Mrs. Browne said.
Before Meag and Catherine knew it, there was a full brawl going on and as Catherine tried to calm Mrs. Browne, she was struck smack in the eye. Meag turned to push someone off her and she too was struck hard. A passerby went running for the Sheriff. The window of the meeting hall was smashed by a flying chair.
Roy shook his head in disbelief, the scene he walked into resembled any bar brawl on a Saturday night. He and his recently hired deputy, Douglas Braxton, soon stopped the ruckus then after a stern talking to about law and order, he gave them 30 days to pay the damages. He was told about the missing money and asked to investigate.
Roy told the ladies in no uncertain terms, another example of this behavior would meet with a stay in his cells then he left.
Meag and Catherine looked at each other and pointed at one another. “You have a black eye Cat” Meag said stifling a chuckle.
“Don’t laugh, you do too.” Catherine said.
“Ben will, oh lord he will be upset about this.”
“Adam is going to...he is so ...oh my. What are we going to say to those men?”

Hoss was in luck. Frieda and her cousin Betty June walked toward him carrying a few bundles. “Afternoon Frieda, Betty June.” Hoss said nervously.
“Hoss, so nice to see you in town today.” Frieda offered sweetly. Betty June hid her giggle.
“Can I help you carry your packages, they look heavy.” Hoss said taking a few of her bundles.
“Oh would you, they are a bit heavy.” Frieda said giving her cousin a scowl at her. Frieda was well capable of carrying heavy bundles, but Betty June told her “not to be such a tomboy, be more dainty, men liked to feel they could help us defenseless females.”
“I am meeting Meag and Catherine for lunch at the hotel, would you two ladies like to have lunch there?”
“I, unfortunately have a piano lesson, but Frieda can join you. I will tell mother you are having lunch with Hoss. He will escort you home safely.”
That would be grand Hoss, yes thank you Betty June.”

Hoss and Frieda sat at the hotel dining room waiting for Meag and Catherine. He ordered some cool lemonade. “Don’t know what’s keeping them Frieda. They are usually waiting for me or my brothers.” Hoss said apologetic.
“Hoss this is fine, we can sip our lemonade and talk. Betty June says your ranch is very beautiful, could I see it sometime?”
“How about Saturday afternoon? When I take you home after lunch I will ask your aunt and uncle if it would alright.” Hoss said beaming.

Catherine and Meag walked into the dining hall trying to hide their blackened eyes. A few people gave them double takes as they walked by. “Probably think our husbands did this.” Catherine said woefully.
“They just might be right once we get home.” Meag mused.
Hoss and Frieda walked into the hotel dining area, Meag and Catherine stood to greet them then seeing their damaged faces he went pale.
“What happened, you two all right?”
“Hush now Hoss, we are fine except for the obvious. You must be Frieda, nice to meet you.” Meag said trying to soothe him enough to shut up.
“Meag, Catherine you just point me to who did this!” Hoss said angry that this could happen.
“It’s not like that, sit down and we will explain. It will be good practice for us before we have to face Ben and Adam.” Catherine said.
Frieda slightly chuckled at that. “Hoss, let them tell you the story. I am curious myself.”
))))

Hearing the carriage returning Adam smiled. Lin Se had finished bathing Lizzie and dressed her in her night clothes. He was anxious to tell Meag about Lizzie’s day and her giggling fit over horses. Hop Sing was about to serve dinner when the ladies and Hoss opened the door.
Ben had Lizzie in his arms when his wife reached for a kiss. “Cath...what the blazes..”
Adam stepped up to take his daughter from his father then he saw Catherine’s bruised face and then looked to Meag. “WHAT THE HELL...WHAT HAPPENED...” Lizzie started to cry.
Feeling like a monster Adam soothed his daughter by cooing to her, but did not break his gaze from Meag.
Joe took Lizzie from him. “Go outside, we will take care of Lizzie.”
Adam took Meag by the elbow outside, Ben took Catherine by the hand and led her upstairs.

Closing the door to their bedroom, Ben sat her down and softly touched her bruised face. “What happened?” He said softly. She looked up at him with a bruised smile. “Well, it was silly really, we walked into the meeting and all hell broke loose Ben. Meag and I tried to break it up and POW, we were both hit by flying fists. I assure you love, that we did not throw any punches.”
Ben kissed her nose. “What was it about, what started the creme of Society to come to blows?”
We both got caught by flying fists. It was awful, our committee has a big problem on its hands.
“I’ll say, but it will be minus two Cartwright women at this point.”
Catherine looked at him gaging if he was serious, he was.
“Ben, there is $3,000 missing from the orphanage project. When I think of all the donations, cake sales, fund raisers .. I cannot leave the committee now. I have a lot of work to do.”
“How is it missing Catherine?”
Margaret McEnroy and her husband are missing and so is the Orphanage fund, all of it. Ben it looks bad but maybe there is a logical explanation.”
“Besides the obvious, it seems Roy should look into it.”
“He took a umm report already when the ruckus was over. He was not a happy Sheriff today.”
Ben lifted his brow and made a hurmph sound.

Adam had Meag well away from the house. “Are you going to calm down or not. I am alright Adam Cartwright, if you let me explain.” Meag said trying to remove that perpetual scowl from his face.
“My genteel wife goes to town and returns with a blackened eye and bruises, yes I am NOT CALM.”
“Well Adam get calm so we can have an intelligent conversation or I am leaving you standing right here.”
“No you are not. He stepped so close she was tempted to step back, but thought better of it. Instead he enfolded her into an embrace, warming her to her toes with his heat. “That is better, now can I tell you what happened without fear of you taking off in a tirade?”
“Speak, and I hope you don’t mind my holding you while I listen.” Adam said with a first nibble on her ear.
Meag tried to make a serious conversation, but his roaming hand that slowly went up her back, then with slow purpose found her bottom and tenderly squeezed pulling her even closer.
“You are not listening to me Adam. First you practically tear my head off over this black eye then you ....stop doing..that”...he captured her mouth then with slow pressure moved softly from left to right making her lips tingle, needing more.
“I heard you, I just want to feel for myself you are alright my love..may take more examination upstairs.”
“It was an accident Adam, nothing more. But if you feel you need to make sure ....who am I to argue.” Meag said with a glint of promise in her eyes.

Sitting at dinner, Lizzie reached for Meag to hold her. The baby looked up at her mother and noticed Meag’s blackened eye. She looked at her and scowled narrowing her eyes and pouted her upper lip. When baby Cartwright made her two eyebrows push together the whole table went quiet for a moment then everyone burst into a table of guffaws. The whole family excluding Adam had to laugh. “Honey, she is your daughter alright. Look at her Pa, is that not Adam’s scowl at it’s worst!”
Ben was laughing whole heartedly. “She has it down!”

Hoss went to his father later that night and asked to speak to him alone. Ben asked him to go outside so they could talk and check on the new string of horses that was brought in this week.
“Well son, what is this about?”
“Pa, I am sorry about Meag and Catherine getting hurt. If I knew they would be walking into a fight..I would never...”
Ben cut him off. “Son, nobody could have known. Please don’t feel guilty about that. They are both fine.”
Hoss put his elbows on the corral top fence, “Pa, how do you know you been hit with it?”
Ben stared at his bashful son, who was reddening even in the dark.
“Hit with what son?”
“You know, the..ummm ..love.”
“Son, I think you will know when it happens. Everyone is different when it comes to their relationships. I would ask you take your time son, don’t rush anything.”
“Yes sir, I like her Pa. I really like Miss Frieda.”
Ben took Hoss further down to a secluded spot by a running stream. Once there, he had a long talk that Hoss was all too familiar with. He listened as his father told him what he expected from his sons when it came to the fairer sex. Hoss, gulped a few times audibly as Ben went into great detail, as to what he did not expect from his sons until they were legally married.

For the next few days Catherine audited the books for the Orphanage project. Funds were defiantly missing. She may have no choice but to see what Sheriff Coffee may have found out. She was reluctant to ask Ben if she and Meag could return to town so soon after the ‘brawl; she asked him to accompany her instead.

))))

Sheriff Coffee had been to the McEnroy place a few times. Something puzzled Roy, if those two ran off with $3,000 of orphanage funds, why leave their small homestead without taking a thing, not even their fine horses or mementos. The house looked untouched, no hurry to leave it, dishes in the bucket for washing, clothes on the line from the days washing. Did not make sense. He asked around about Trent and if was a gambler or owed any large debts. Trent and Martha were the type to pay cash on the barrel head. The whole thing did not make sense. Gertrude swore to Roy that she felt something very wrong is amiss with her sister and husband. She pleaded that he take people out to look for them.

Ben and Catherine took their horses for the ride to town. Ben wanted to take her to their secret place near the lake. They had made love there before, he wasn’t sure she remembered that today was the anniversary of that very same date one year before. In his saddle bag was a gift for her he planned to give her.

Sheriff Coffee gave Ben and Catherine no more information as far as finding the money or the McEnroys. He did say he did not feel they absconded with the money. Too many unanswered questions plagued him. He was determined to solve this puzzle if it was the last thing he would do. Ben took Catherine to the Hotel for a late lunch. Her blackened eye was much less noticeable now. They talked and laughed about Little Lizzie’s visit, Hoss and Little Joe’s latest antics. Not since their honeymoon had they spent such an enjoyable lunch alone together. When they left the restaurant, Catherine felt the world tilt then passed out at his feet. He simply turned to tell her if she wanted to stop by Gertrude’s then he looked down, his wife was on the ground. Ben picked her up quickly and headed straight for Doc Martin’s office.

Paul Martin had just sat down after returning from the Johnson spread, Mrs. Johnson just delivered her ninth child. The baby was breach and very large. Mrs. Johnson vowed it would be her last child, of course she had said that the last three deliveries. Sitting with a cup of tea in his hand, the frantic knock at his door almost made him drop his cup. “Paul, it’s Ben ...Catherine something is wrong...”
Paul opened the door widely. “Put her in the exam room Ben, come tell me what happened.
Ben explained that all was fine, they ate lunch, Catherine ate with a good appetite. When they went outside she simply dropped to ground in a faint. Paul asked a few more questions then Catherine’s eyes fluttered open. She tried to sit up, but Ben steadied her and told her to stay laying down. “You are at Paul’s office love, you fainted and scared the life from me.”

“Ben, can I have a moment with the good doctor?” Catherine asked softly.
“Why would you want...alright, just a moment and then I am coming back in here.”
“Thank you sweetheart.” Catherine said.

“Well young lady, you still have not told your husband have you? I think it is time to let him in on it. Have you been taking care of yourself, what the blazes is that?” Paul said pointing to her eye.
“My blackened eye, oh you must of heard of the events of the other day. Meag and I both ended up with fists in our faces.”
“Yes and even treated a few of Virginia City ‘social butterflies.’
“Well I guess we should let Ben know. I was hoping to make it more romantic, but I am afraid he won’t let me leave your office unless he had a diagnosis.”
Paul called Ben into his office. Catherine held out her hand to him to take. Ben stood next to her and waited for the ‘bad news’ about his wife.
Ben whispered in her ear, “No matter what it is my love, I will be right next to you to see you through it.”
“I hope so good sir since you are the one who is guilty of making me pregnant.” Catherine said teasingly.
At first it did not sink in, Ben was expecting the worst news about his beloved wife, he was so happy in his life this last year he was convinced once God remembered, he would suffer another devastation in his life. Then realization of what Catherine just said hit him in the gut.
“Pre-pregnant?” Ben said dumbly.
“Yes, sweetheart, you are going to be a father in about 6 or 7 months. I didn’t want to tell you just yet, but apparently this child of yours wants to be a trouble maker. I fainted because I am with child, nothing more.”
“Paul, tell me she will be alright. She is thirty five this September, will she..”
Benjamin Cartwright! I am not too old, don’t you dare say that about me!” Catherine said almost in tears.

“She will be fine. This is her first baby Ben not like Mrs. Johnson who is still giving birth after 40 and had me up most the night with her ninth child. Catherine is healthy, in great physical shape and will do fine, I am confident with proper nutrition and rest, she will have a fine son or daughter with nothing abnormal. There is always risk, but she is steps ahead just by being in such fine health. Congratulations Ben, if I had not said it yet.” Paul said with a gleeful smile.

Ben and Catherine sent word to the ranch they would not be home until the following morning. Ben had rented a room at the Hotel. He did not want her to ride today after fainting. They went upstairs and made love for the rest of the afternoon. Coming down only for a quick dinner then went back to their room. He told her continually how much he loved his wife and could not wait to see their child enter the world. Tomorrow they would go home and announce it to the family. Catherine was already starting to consider names.
)))))
Hop Sing was the only one home when Ben and Catherine returned from Virginia City. He told Ben that Adam and Hoss were asked to join a search party for the McEnroy couple. Catherine asked that Ben help too, she would be fine and would be visiting Meag and Lizzie this afternoon.
He would not let her ride, he insisted Hop Sing take her in the carriage. She rolled her eyes but acquiesced to his request.
Meag was surprised pleasantly by Catherine’s visit. Hop Sing and Lin Se were also glad to see each other again. Lizzie had taken up standing with the help of a table leg or the overstuffed chairs.
Busting with her news, Catherine blurted it out. “Lizzie will soon have a new playmate.”
“Oh dear, how did you know? Am I showing already, Adam had not even noticed it yet.”
Catherine at first was still as a stone then laughed until her sides hurt.
“I didn’t notice, I was talking about me.”
Meag’s mouth went wide open then she ran up to hug her tightly. “How wonderful, you didn’t think it would happen for you. So much for your theories you are too old. Silly girl, those Cartwright men are potent, I didn’t doubt it for a moment. But when, when are you due to deliver?”
“Doc thinks January, I think this is a Christmas present. Ben is thrilled but scared for me at the same time. I fainted in town yesterday after we had lunch. Paul Martin says I am fine, fainting and being nauseous happens to women, some women are sick all nine months. I hope it passes soon, he won’t let me ride or go anywhere by myself.” Catherine said.
I guess Adam and Ben will both have Christmas surprises. I am due that time also. “
The two women hugged again in joy.

Hop Sing told Lin Se what he suspected about Catherine. She has yet to verify she is with child. Surprisingly, Lin Se had told Hop Sing her same suspicion about Meag. The two laughed at that.

Meag didn’t know how to tell Adam yet. He was so adamant about his ‘family plan’ chart, it made her roll her eyes. Like a drawing of one of his buildings he showed her the progression of their family additions as if adding building blocks not children.
“Adam, you cannot plan life so precisely. Life has a way of being messy and out of order.” Meag told him the other night. Even that big hint he did not clue into. He only kissed her until she forgot her own name and made love to her.
Lizzie awoke from her nap quite loudly. Catherine insisted on changing her and getting her up.
“I need the practice and you need a break.”

That evening the men returned with devastating news. The McEnroys were found, both dead from an accidental drowning. The river they tried to cross in an old buckboard was too swift. The money bag was recovered with all $3,000 drenched dollars intact.
Ben and Roy went to inform Gertrude about her sister and brother in-law.

That Sunday after services, the Cartwrights had a very special dinner awaiting them at home.
“What is the occasion Hop Sing, Lin Se?” Adam asked holding his little girl at bay from diving into her mashed potatoes.
“Special dinner to for Thanksgiving.” Hop Sing said putting platters of food down on the table.
“This is Sunday, and it is not Thanksgiving.” Hoss said knowing very well when his favorite Holiday was.
Ben stood up taking a butter knife and dinged his crystal goblet until all eyes were on him. I have something to say, may I have your attention please.”
All eyes went on the head of the family with their silence. He took his wife’s hand and kissed her hand briefly and held it in his. “This dinner is a special Thanksgiving, we have a lot to be thankful for today and in 6 or 7 months we will have even more to be thankful for. My dear wife and I are to blessed with a new member of the Cartwright family.”
Adam’s eyes went immediately to Meag who must have known this news. She didn’t seem too surprised only happily clapped to their news. Hoss pounded his father’s back and gave his step mother a kiss on the cheek.
Little Joe looked shocked. “Pa, aren’t you too old...for such?..gee Pa.” Joe said blushing red.
Adam kissed Catherine on her other cheek. “Pa, you never cease to amaze me. I could not be happier.”
“Yes you can.” Meag said standing up.
“You see husband, our baby will be born just about the time your new brother or sister will be arriving.”
Adam and Ben exchanged joyful glances. Could it be that events of the passed years of devastation and loss had been partially repaid to them with this blissful joy? So much they had lived through, lost and rebuilt seemed to ease into this cocoon of happiness this night.
“Our family is doubly blessed.” Ben said kissing his wife then his daughter in law, his eyes shone with unshed tears.
“Meag, how long have you been keeping this from me?” Adam said in a mock stern voice.
“I hinted and hinted, but you dear love of my live, were too involved in your family chart to listen.”
Adam rolled his eyes not at her but himself. “You are right my girl, life is a mess of unexpected twists and turns, heartaches and joys. I am ready to be as messy and unorganized as life will allow. I have a feeling this family will be in for the ride of its life this generation and the next. I just hope the world will be ready for us.

Not the End only the Beginning.
