The Cartwright brothers
are at the lumber camp. Little Joe walks
over to Adam with a puzzled look on his face. "Hey, Adam,
what's
that look on Hoss's face for?"
Adam just smirks.
Joe studies Hoss from a distance. "He looks like he's in pain
or
something."
"He's looking for bird's nests." Adam winks at Joe.
"Huh?"
"Yeah. We've got all these trees we've gotta cut down for the
contract, but he wants to make sure there are no birds' nests in
the
trees we drop."
"You're kidding me."
"Nope."
"We don't have time for this."
Adam eyes his youngest brother. "You gonna tell him?"
Joe screws up his face. "Not me. You're the silver
tongued
genius
in the family."
Adam's amused. "Thank you."
"So you tell him, Adam."
"Not me."
Joe blows out a long breath. "Well, we can't wait all day!"
Adam rubs his hand over his chin as he considers the
matter.
Finally, "Hey, Hoss!"
Hoss looks his brothers' way. "Huh?"
"Spot any?"
"Nah. I cain't see nuthin from down here."
Joe sticks his hands on his hips. "Then let's get back to
work! I
got plans in town tonight!"
"Aw, Joe, I gotta make sure there are no baby birds up in them
trees."
"Hoss!"
"Ya wouldn't want ta kill 'em, would ya?"
Exasperated, Little Joe appeals to Adam. "Do something!"
Adam walks over toward Hoss, leaving Little Joe standing
there. Joe
watches as Adam cups his hand to Hoss's ear and whispers something
to their middle brother. Hoss listens, nods his head with a
smile,
and then grabs an ax to begin working. Adam saunters back
over to
Joe.
Puzzled, Little Joe asks him, "What did you say to him?"
Adam stands there grinning.
"Well? What did you tell him?"
Adam keeps the suspense up a little longer. At last, he tells
his
youngest brother, "I told him you'd climb every tree and check for
little birds before the tree got chopped down, and that I just
remembered you had already checked that one."
"You told him, what?!?"
Adam smirked again. "You better get climbing if you want to
get
to
town tonight."
"You told him, WHAT!?"
Adam smiles and walks off.
"ADAM!!"
THE END.
