To Have and Have Not
By Robin
The Cartwright brothers walked into the quiet, empty General Store. They were
passing through the high desert town and were looking to purchase a new
canteen and some supplies for the trip back to the Ponderosa.
It was early evening and the place was dimly lit by one small flickering
kerosene lantern on the counter. "Sure hope they have what we need, Little
Brother," Hoss Cartwright said. He scooped up a handful of soda crackers from the
barrel and started snacking.
"Me too," Joe agreed. "Hello? Is anyone here?"
Suddenly a beautiful girl appeared from the back room of the store. She was
slender and elegant looking with long honey colored hair. "Hello, Steve," she
purred looking directly at Little Joe. "Who is your friend?"
"Steve? I think you have me mixed up with someone else," Joe smiled his most
heart stopping smile.
"You know you don't have to act with me, Steve," the girl said softly. Her
gaze was fixed on handsome Joe Cartwright.
"I’m not acting. I’m not Steve either. My name is Joe Cartwright. And this
is my brother Hoss."
"Hello Steve," the beautiful girl smiled seductively.
"Steve?" Joe swallowed hard. "I just said name isn't Steve but I sure wish I
was."
"Me too. What is your name, Ma’m," Hoss said tipping his hat politely and
scooping up another handful of soda crackers.
"Lauren …" the long haired girl purred. She had beautiful eyes.
"Lorne?" Hoss elbowed Joe. "Ain’t that a man’s name? Are you Canadian? "
"Not Lorne," the gorgeous girl flipped her soft loose hair out of her eyes.
"Lauren. "
"Lauren?" Joe repeated ."That’s  pretty name."
"A right pretty name for  a mighty pretty gal," Hoss smiled nibbling on
another handful of crackers.
Joe’s heart pounded in his chest. This was one of the most luscious looking
girls he had ever seen. He had to have her. "Let me say something."
"You don't have to say anything and you don't have to do anything...not a
thing. Oh, maybe just whistle. You know how to whistle, don't you, Steve? You
just put your lips together and blow." the beautiful long legged girl whispered
huskily. She had soulful eyes and long shiny hair.
Hoss and Joe nodded like two bobble heads.
Hoss tried to whistle and a stream of cracker crumbs spewed forth and
splattered on Joe’s shirt.
Joe pursed his lips together and exhaled. " Just call me
Steve...TWWWWWWWWwwwwweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet"
The rest is history... and the waves crashed on
Lake Tahoe.
