Adam Cartwright had an appointment at the Ponderosa, situated by Eagle
Station. He walked to the stable where the meeting took place. Before Adam
had checked of there was no one of his family (father Ben and younger
brothers Hoss and Little Joe), hand Carlos Rivera De Vega and their cook
Hop
Sing was or were not present. To his big relief that wasn’t so. Quickly
he
walked to the appointed spot where he waited.
Finally the person came. It turned out to be James Miller.
“Are you Adam Cartwright of the Ponderosa Ranch?”, asked James.
“Yes, it’s me. And then you are James Miller”, said Adam.
“I am that indeed but how do I know that you are the one you say that you
are?”, asked James.
“I AM Adam Cartwright! Why won’t you believe me?”, asked the young
Cartwright.
“Everyone can say that he is Adam Cartwright is. Just prove it”, replied
James.
Adam found it a bit strange but decided to do it anyway.
“Go along to my father. He will tell you for sure that I am Adam Cartwright”
said Adam.
They mounted on their horses and rode to a meadow where
Ben Cartwright was.
The rancher saw his eldest son with the visitor coming and stopped working.
“Pa, I had an appointment with this man but he doesn’t want to believe that
I am Adam Cartwright”, said Adam.
James began to feel wetness and became nervous. He looked skittish around
him what father and son Cartwright noticed.
Ben looked at the visitor and replied, “Sir, For sure this is Adam
Cartwright. I can know it because he is my son.”
James felt looked foolish and fled away.
Ben looked at Adam and asked amazed, “What sort of appointment did you have
with him?”
“Something about a book that he had written. At least he said that in a
letter he had sent me”, Adam explained.
He let read the letter and looked at his father questionable.
“Son, there always will be people like him. But if they don’t believe you
right away when you introduce yourself you can’t help it either”, Ben
answered.
“Maybe he has been with more people and has he tried to con them. But he
has
to be up earlier to do that to us”, said Adam.
Ben nodded.
