"The Journal Of Adam Cartwright"

By: Prima Donna

Adam sat in his cabin, watching outside the window the other passengers walking around, the day was sunny, a little breezy, but mild on this April Spring day. The morning beckons him to leave and go down for breakfast shortly, he opens up his journal which he decided to start one on his new exciting traveling, being on his own. Adam reads from last night's entry he wrote before he went to sleep.

April 2 1865

I embarked earlier that day on this ship the Constitution which sailed off from New England, the excitement of the day for me was seeing the porters and the crew at work, bringing in the luggage for the passengers. It was going to be a great day for me, since I left the Ponderosa. Oh don't take me wrong for this, I do miss Pa, Joe and Hoss, leaving the home that Pa and I tried to work hard on our ranch.

My trip to England should be very interesting, I have read about London where the ship will disembark, there hopefully I'll get a job, maybe working in a bank, since I have often gone on errands for Pa there. But also a teaching job would be good as well, from having experience substituting for Barbara when she fell off that horse and hurt her arm. Whatever I can do, will be satisfactory, the itch of staying too long will maybe have me leave London and travel to another country, or just living the life here, who knows?

The dinner was excellent, I feel stuffed, Oh Hop Sing's cooking is wonderful, he can certain cook his meals, I do miss him as well. I spoke to the Captain after dinner was over, we spoke about how Pa use to be a seaman, and also that part of his blood is in me.

Just looking out at the ocean, the full moon in the night sky, I'm feeling exhausted from the whole day, unpacking and looking around this ship, magnificent, I think I'm feeling blue, just remembering the Nevada's expanse of trees galore, the blue skies ahead, the snow near the mountains in winter, Lake Tahoe on a summer day. Well I must stop here until tomorrow, have to get early tomorrow for the ship's breakfast.

Adam closed his journal and put it away in the desk drawer, he sighed and thought about the Ponderosa and his family, he knew that leaving was the right thing to do, missing them was the hardest. Adam got up and walked out of the cabin, heading for the dining room, seeing the other passengers going the same direction, chatting happily.

The End
